Rain hit the third-floor plate glass like buckshot, hard enough to rattle the aluminum frames in their concrete sleeves.

Corinne adjusted the foam pad on her left ear, tapped the foot pedal beneath her desk, and spoke into the boom mic before the third ring could echo down the hall.

"County Emergency, Vance forty-six. What is the address of your emergency?"

A man's voice came through, shredded by alternator whine and the roar of gutter runoff. He was trapped under the Fourth Street railway bridge. His Oldsmobile had stalled out up to the chrome door trim, water creeping past the pedals, headlights already dead beneath the brown churn.

"Do not try to push the vehicle," she said, her fingers clattering across the mechanical keys of the CAD terminal without looking down. "Stay on the roof if you can get out the window. Can you roll the glass down?"

Static crackled in the earpiece. The man yelled something about his shoes, then about a leather briefcase on the floor mat. People always wanted to save the leather.

"Sir, leave the briefcase. If the door won't push against the current, use the crank handle. Roll it down now

while the battery has juice left."

She flagged the ticket: Priority Two, stranded motorist, water rising, Fourth and Division.

Engine Three, already clearing a flooded crawlspace on Maple, caught the assignment before she cleared the buffer. The green phosphor screen gave a brief, watery shudder as the batch processed. Outside, lightning stripped the sky to bone white, showing the jagged rooftops of the industrial district below, then dropped the room back into charcoal shadow.

Beside her, terminal six sat dark. Terminal eight was empty, its chair pushed back at an angle, the vinyl seat cushion patched with black electrical tape that had begun to peel at the corners.

The floor smelled of wet overcoats, floor wax, and the burnt bottom of the glass pot in the breakroom. Across the aisle, Miller was chewing sunflower seeds into an empty Styrofoam cup, his voice a flat, nasal hum as he talked an old woman through shutting off her basement main. On the far platform, under the dim yellow canopy of the supervisor's desk, Brenda stood leaning over a stack of paper run-logs, a red ballpoint pen tucked behind her ear like a butcher's pencil.

Corinne checked the wall clock: 02:14.

Six hours left on the graveyard shift.

The air in the room hung thick, heavy with moisture

drawn up from the river and trapped by the municipal heating system. Drawing a breath through her nose brought the taste of damp cinderblock and copper dust. Her fingers remained stiff from the ride in on the crosstown bus, thirty-two minutes through axle-deep puddles with the defroster blowing cold grease against the windshield. Her socks were still damp inside her boots.

A chirp hit the headset. Another trunk line dropped into the stack.

"County Emergency, Vance forty-six."

"My spruce," an old man said, his voice carrying the dry, whistling rasp of someone who slept with his teeth in a glass on the nightstand. "The big one near the road. It came down across the wires. They're jumping on the asphalt. Like snakes. Big blue sparks."

"Is the wire touching your house, sir?"

"No. It's out on the county road."

"Are you inside?"

"I'm at the window. The bedroom window."

"Step back from the glass, sir. Turn off your front porch light if the switch is on the wall, and stay in the center of the room. Do not go out into the yard."

"It's loud," he said, sounding more annoyed than scared. "Sounds like bacon frying."

"We have the road crew logged. Stay away from the porch until they get there."

She punched the keys, tagged the hazard for the utility truck, and cleared the loop.

Her thumb found the edge of the console desk, where thirty years of dispatchers had dug grooves into the laminate with pocket knives, paper clips, and fingernails. A faint rhythm always governed the night shift when the weather broke bad, like bailing a rowboat with a tin cup. You didn't try to empty the lake; you just kept the floorboards from disappearing under the surface.

Her cell phone vibrated on the shelf above the keyboard.

Two short buzzes.

She slipped it toward her, keeping her eyes on the dispatch queue. A text message appeared from Chloe:

Roof at the exchange is leaking over bay four. Buckets full. Still tracing the 1954 crossbar leads. Don't wait up.

Corinne stared at the small screen. Chloe had been inside the old Bell building on Sixth Street since noon, working through the architectural salvage inventory for the historical commission. Three floors of cold brick, iron conduit, and dust that smelled like old dry-cell batteries.

She tapped out a reply with one finger:

Storm is getting worse. Streets under the viaduct are closed. Go home.

The reply took twenty seconds:

Last day to tag the iron before the demo permit clears. I'm fine. Have coffee.

Corinne set the phone face down, the glass greasy with thumbprints.

To her left, the vacant station, terminal seven, gave a faint click. It wasn't the sound of an incoming call through the hunt group. The hunt group had a steady, two-tone electronic warble that came through the central speaker before routing to an available operator. This was a mechanical snap, like a relay arm falling into a copper slot somewhere in the basement cable vault.

She glanced at the dark screen. The monitor remained dead, its glass gray and convex, reflecting the overhead fluorescent tubes.

Then the carrier tone hit her headset.

The signal bypassed the main board entirely. The yellow indicator lights for Line One through Line Twelve remained unlit. The digital display at the top of her console, which tracked caller ID, automatic number identification, and incoming cell tower triangulation, showed eight flat dashes.

Corinne pressed the ear pad closer.

No hiss of rain intruded. No windshield wipers groaned, and no engine idled or sirens wailed. The channel had the sterile emptiness of an internal line, the sort

used for maintenance loops between the sub-basement switchgear and the county administration offices across the plaza.

"Vance forty-six," she said.

The silence lasted three seconds.

A burst of white noise tore across the earpiece, sharp enough to make her flinch, followed by a faint hum like an alternating current transformer under heavy load. Sixty cycles. Low and dry.

"County Emergency," she repeated, leaning toward the gooseneck mic. "Caller on the bypass, state your location."

A voice came out of the receiver.

"North Rail yard," the voice said. "Track nine, south of the gravel hopper. Box fourteen."

Her hand froze over the number pad.

The delivery was clean, carrying the clipped, even cadence of an emergency operator reading from a standard field card. The vowels were flattened by a Midwestern grain, the consonants biting down hard on the numbers.

It was her own voice.

This was no recording of an old call. She knew her own tone, the way her vocal cords thinned out on the second half of a double shift, the slight drop at the end of a street address that came from fifteen years of telling people where the ambulances were coming from.

The words, however, were entirely foreign.

"Yardmaster down," the voice said. The speech was seamless, perfectly level, completely stripped of the small hesitations of a living throat. "Lacerations to the carotid and upper thorax. Deep tissue trauma. Punctures through the left clavicular notch. Tool used appears to be an eight-inch timber slick or modified draw-knife. The ground is gravel over limestone ballast. Blood is pooling against the tie-plates on switch seven."

She pulled the headset off her left ear, let it dangle against her collar, and surveyed the room.

Miller was still talking about the spruce tree, his boots propped on a low metal filing cabinet, his left hand tracing circles in the air. Across the floor, Brenda had picked up a blue clipboard and was checking the water depth reports from the lower precinct.

Everything sounded ordinary. The air conditioning wheezed. Rain threw itself against the windowpanes like handfuls of wet gravel.

Corinne lifted the headset back to her ear.

The voice was still speaking. It didn't pause for breath or make the faint, wet clicks of saliva that accompanied human speech. It sounded as though it had been assembled out of brass pins and magnetic tape.

"Call logged at zero-two-fifty," the voice said. "Responding units should approach from the western service

road off Industrial Boulevard. The north crossing is blocked by three stalled grain cars. Switcher engine nine-oh-four is idling on the spur. Yardmaster's lantern is still burning on the deck. Red casing. Kerosene."

A loud, flat click cut the feed.

The dead air vanished. The normal hiss of the system returned, a faint ocean roar of forty open trunks idling across the county grid.

Corinne checked the console's digital clock: 02:41:18.

Her throat felt dry, as if coated in chalk. She reached for her mug, found it empty, and set it down hard enough on the Formica to make the plastic base rattle against the frame.

"Miller," she said.

Her voice sounded rough, small against the noise of the storm outside.

Miller didn't look up. "Yeah. Go ahead."

"Did you run a loop test just now?"

He dropped another sunflower shell into his cup. "Maintenance doesn't touch the relays after midnight. Not with this water. The vault's probably got four inches of creek runoff across the floorboards right now."

"Someone just patched into my station."

"Internal?"

"There wasn't an ANI string."

Miller finally turned his head, squinting through heavy

horn-rimmed glasses that had slipped halfway down the bridge of his nose. "Line twelve gets bleed-through when the trunk on Market Street gets wet. I had an old boy talking about his tractor for twenty minutes back in November. Turned out he was dialing a butcher shop in Derry and the cross-connect was shorting out against the storm drain."

"This wasn't a butcher shop."

She turned back to her terminal, fingers unsteady. She had to hit backspace twice before punching the command to query the incoming packet buffer: SYS:TRK:AUD:REC.

The screen blinked. The cursor jumped to the left margin, chattered three times, and returned an empty table:

NO ACTIVE RECORD ON TRUNK 00. LAST CALL DURATION: 00:00:00. PACKET LOSS: 0.00%.

"Nothing," she muttered. She leaned across the narrow divide between their desks. "Miller. Check the rail yard logs. Did anything come in from the dispatcher out at North Rail?"

"North Rail?" Miller pulled his keyboard closer with a screech of metal runners. "They don't call us unless someone gets an arm caught in a coupler. They've got their own security out there. Old men with flashlights and lead pipes."

He typed four strokes, his knuckles thick and gray-haired.
